How an Affiliate Program Can Make a Leader
In today’s marketing landscape, affiliate programs get both positive and negative reviews. In the beginning, an affiliate program is primarily one for generating income. An affiliate program is defined as using a tribe of folks who believe in your brand to promote that brand on their own channels. Here is how it works. Your company has a product or brand that you want to promote.
You find or solicit partners (otherwise referred to as affiliates, associates, partners, internet marketers) for your company to promote or recommend (market or promote) your product or service to their followers. Affiliates might do this by writing a post about the product, placing a button or banner ad on their personal websites, mentioning it in their email newsletters or talking about it on social media. Affiliates include special links (called affiliate links) to the product or service so followers can check it out for themselves. Affiliate links contain a special number, an affiliate ID, which is unique to to the affiliate and allows affiliates to earn commission on purchases from their followers. Affiliate marketing benefits both the affiliates and the company.

The true success of any affiliate program, however, lies in the efforts of the affiliates, which is directly tied to the affiliates’ ability to trust in their leader. As an affiliate program manager, your number one task is to motivate and teach, building a consistent brand of leadership so that your affiliates will trust and follow your suggestions.
Geno Prussakov, leading speaker on affiliate marketing and owner of AM Navigator, explains that “in affiliate program management (which many still mistakenly believe to be a task of “affiliate management”)— the managers that practice sensitive coaching and mutual respect are the ones that achieve more. Affiliates respect them in return, and want to do more for them.”
An affiliate program has proven to be successful in income building, but it can also help you establish yourself as a leader.
If you are building an affiliate program, there are several ways to build success as a leader.
- Communicate constantly with your affiliate team. From your top affiliates, to the most junior member, keep the lines of communication open. As Prussakov mentions, “unlike in traditional management contexts where leaders are appointed, in affiliate program management context much is based on personal relationships and genuine care.
- Promote your business in any way that causes new affiliates to desire to join. When thinking about the image you want to portray, make sure that your affiliates and any new leads are able to easily understand your brand, your message, and your ethos. If you cannot get your point across easily and effectively, your brand suffer and your affiliates may not understand why they should perform for you as a leader. We always recommend honing any skills in marketing and communication, as this is one of the most important leadership skills to possess.
- As I’ve mentioned before, effective leaders take ownership, making decisions without permission and following up those decisions with appropriate guidance. Even if the wrong decision is made, you still took the chance to make that decision and that says something. Decision making skills can be taught. However, taking the risk of making that decision is something a good leader must practice or have inherent.
- Effective leaders are constantly improving their own emotional intelligence through continued learning. If you cannot develop your own skills, then how can you possibly help your team develop theirs? Be willing to admit that you still have room to grow and your team will be more likely to want to grow as well. While this can be one of the hardest parts of leadership, it can also be the most rewarding for both you and your team.
