and the Stages of change
Among
the variety of factors which influence our practice of leadership
is the process of change itself. A revolutionary 'transtheoretical'
five-stage process for managing change effectively over
time and with appropriate supports is now available.
Successful self-changing individuals follow a powerful
and, perhaps most important, controllable and predictable
course.
Along this course are various stages, each calling for
particular and different approaches, guidance and support.
No one stage is any more or less important than another.
The process focuses on the spiraling, rather than linear,
path of change and proceeds in an atmosphere of encouragement,
support, patience and forgiveness.
The Model, developed by Dr. James Prochaska and his team
at the Universiy of Rhode Island, studied the five stages
of change that people experience as they work to incorporate
new behaviours and discard old ones which no longer serve
them.
- Precontemplation
- Contemplation
- Preparation
- Action
- Maintenance
A substantial amount of research has been conducted, and
a variety of applications developed, around understanding
the qualities of these stages, the average lengths of time
people spend in each, the spiraling effect, and the supports
and interventions that are most effective for each stage.
