Qualities Of A Great TeleClass Leader
- Grace & Respect - Be extremely gracious and attentive
to anyone and everyone who shares; remember and reference
what people say. Make sure participants know 2 things:
- It's very, very safe to contribute
- Their ideas contribute to the meaning being generated
in the conversation or dialogue.
- Passion - Select a subject that you are passionate
about, that you have a perspective on, and that you have
some experience/expertise in (you would consider yourself
a Subject Matter Expert or SME). *Note: Don't teach a subject
that you know a lot about but the passion is gone.
- Model First - Whenever possible, DO THE THING
rather than just talk about it -then talk about it...
- Share yourself - sharing your story creates an
open environment. Tell short stories about your own experience,
share quotes that move you, read passages from books that
excite you. BE MOVED and inspire from that place.
- Maintain 'charge neutral' emotionally - remember,
a dialogue is open to all points of view (be sure to respond
rather than react,)
- Collaborate - Always maintain a mindset of collaboration
with your participants - even if (especially if) you are
an expert! Be willing to learn from your participants.
- Lightness, humour and fun - Not all, but MOST
subjects can be approached in a light way. This does NOT
mean telling jokes. It does mean maintaining an open sense
of humour to the lighter side of the subject and being willing
to laugh at your own (sometimes silly) ideas. Most adults
learn better in a light (as opposed to serious) environment.
- Deep Listening - Listening to what participants
say in a way that you derive:
- What they mean
- The feeling behind it (the vocal body language) and
- How it is valuable in the conversation
